My dear Mother:

This is the first day of exam. week. During this week there will be more midnight oil burned than has been consumed for the last year. These are the times that try men's souls. Those who are behind in their studies must make up their deficiencies in the examinations, and only by cramming and "[loving?]" night and day during this week can they hope to pass.

Last Thursday night our Literary Society held its annual banquet in the Palo Alto Hotel. It was a gala occasion for the Society. The table was piled high with good things and we eat and eat until we were too full for utterance when the toastmaster announced the toasts.
