My dear Mother:
I see from your letter that Paul is raised in March to a higher salary. I am glad to hear that it takes place so soon. I wish Claude could step into his old position, but I fear he is not able to do the work. If Claude is ever to raise himself from a delivery [?] job he must begin by making himself capable of something better. He must begin by getting an education. The fellow who is to succeed in the business world of to day, if he has no capital to back him up or friends to give him an opening & a chance to rise, must be educated. And Claude's desultory work at the High School will never be construed as an education.
