Hi Darling -

I have just a few minutes before German class to finish this and get it mailed
today, because Dr. Tarshus wants a meeting of his seminar right after lunch and the
mail goes at 1 pm at latest. So I'll write fast!

The sun cleared early Monday afternoon, and its been heavenly weather ever
since, with white puff clouds dancing across the sky to make the blue look even
bluer. Two months of this beauty will be just unbelievable.

I spent most of Monday afternoon (except for a short meeting with the new faculty)
playing basketball! We're throwing together a team, have a game (girls team also
plays! and they are really a laugh) tonight after dinner in Backnang. It
really feels good to be out of doors and getting exercise.

Monday night the Russian travelers organized a Reg Dance (The Red Hot Reg)
for us all here on the Burg, and it was a fantastic organized success. All the teachers, etc
were invited, and Dr. Boerner and Frl. Buerfel (German teacher) both thought it
the best show on the Burg yet! They really went all out, having planned it on the
train ride home. The library was filled with huge posters of Lenin, etc., with little
cutting remarks of great wit added below! As we came in the door - single file,
led by an "Intourist guide", - we were met by women guards (MAC was one) in long
coats, Russian fur caps, with make believe guns on their shoulders. Downstairs in the
Ratskeller was the Lenin Stalin mausoleum ("silence, no pictures please"!), where
two of the fellows were laid out in tuxedos with flowers and medals on their chest.
The whole effect was terrific - for food - vodka in orange or tomato juice, crackers
with cheese and fish and cavier, pretzels. And they put on a short show, with takeoffs
on popular songs, communist words added (Sons of the Stanford Reds, etc). Then
there was some dancing and much conversation with new professors and about
vacation experiences. There will never be a Reg dance at Stanford as good as this
one was!

I spent most of yesterday morning talking with Dr. Tarshus about my future
plans, some independent reading for this quarter and the summer, the Econ
dept., etc. We're well acquainted now and I'm going to enjoy very much working
and talking with him here and back at Stanford next year.

Then yesterday afternoon we had a four hour guest lecture on European art
and architecture (medieval and Gothic), of which we have 2 more hours today
more on that tomorrow. Last night Dick and I went down together to see the
Krauters, had a pleasant evening and ate lots of Kuchen! Never go there
without getting stuffed with food, but I don't mind that too much!

Golly, sweetheart, but I feel so healthy, so physically and mentally
awake, so in touch with beautiful nature today, as we begin a new quarter here
All I need to make things perfect is to have you in my arms right now, sharing
it all with me, and adding your special beauty to it all. I love you with all
my heart, my darling Anne, and I miss you so very much. I pray the days
go quickly by until we're together again. G'night and sweet dreams of us again
I love you!
Your George
