Avalon
Oct 5th 1897 noon 67o

The October meeting of the Horticultural
held at Avalon was called to
order at 4.30 and after the minutes
had been read and approved
Mary E. Gilpin read a very pretty
poem called " Tassled corn". The second
reader Chas. F. Kirk was absent but he
was well represented by his mother Mary
Willis Kirk, who read an interesting article
on the appetite of the spider. Of a
man consumed as much proportionately
he would eat, in twenty-four hours,
one hundred and twenty larks besides
numerous large animals such as
sheep cameleopards etc. Dr Kirk
read an article "Potato bugs on Tomatoes"
and "A new mode of Bagging Grapes",
using bags made of cotton and putting
two clusters in each bag.

The report of the Forethought committee
was next read and proved both interesting
and helpful
