April Monday 12th Wind

The violence of the wind abated
somewhat last night, but began
again this morning soon after
sun rise & blew throughout the
day, but not so violently as yesterday.
Drove to Ashton & Homewood.
Cousin Hannah better.
Purchased 1 1/2 Bushels seed potatoes
of B H Miller at Ashton.
Brought "uncle" Henson home with
me & commenced planting potatoes
got about half done. Made and
put on a railing above the dash
on Germantown wagon for driving
reins to slide over. Greased and
put the wagon in order to go to Laurel
tomorrow afterr the children Charley
and Dora.

Tuesday 13th

"Uncle Henson" stayed all night (last)
& slept on lounge on sofa in dining
room. Rather more pleasant today.
Took Willie with me & went to Laurel to
meet Charley & Dora on their return from
Harford Co: "Bettie" horse was taken with
"colic" in Laurel & we had "much to do"
to get home with her & notwithstanding
we had Joe & Ed Davis & others to help
do all that could be done for her,
she died suddenly after great suffering
about 8.30 p.m. I am so delighted
to have the children home again &
feel that the loss was unavoidable
& no one to blame that I shall not
feel as badly about my loss as under
other circumstances I should have
done.

April Wednesday 14th 1880

Made "post mortem" examination
of poor "Bettie" and discovered that
her death was caused by true "colic"
with stricture of the bowels.
Had her decently buried in the woods
N.E. of the stable. Sent to J C Bentley's
and got a "fagg" of hay to last until
I can procure a load. Walked up
to the store after tea.
Hung a venetian door in the passage
opposite the cellar door.

53o Clear & Cloudy
