PAEONIES.
Everyone knows the old fashioned red "Piny" of our grandmother's garden, but the specialists of America, Europe and particularly those of Japan, have been at work so that there are now more than one thousand named varieties, many of them of the most curiously beautiful shapes and colors. It is truly a noble flower, rivaling the rose in brilliancy of color and perfection of bloom, while greatly surpassing it in size and stately grandeur. One writer has well said that the "Paeony fully equals the rose, except in poetry, perfume, thorns, bugs and disease." They are hardy as an oak requiring no protection even in the severest climate. They are of the easiest culture, most vigorous habit, and free from all disease and insects. The foliage is rich, glossy and ornamental, even when plants are not in bloom. Many of the newer varieties are quite fragrant and no other flower is so well adapted for large showy bouquets, the blooms selling readily in Chicago and other large eastern cities for $10.00 per 100 and the supply does not equal the demand. We have acres of Paeonies, including a vast number of sorts. We name a few of the most popular and offer the others in mixture. Plant paeonies this year, plant lots of them in rows, beds, or as specimen plants on the lawn. If you have an extensive lawn a large bed of them will make a grand show, surpassing even a bed of Rhododendrons. Set out the roots as early in spring as possible in order to secure a good growth. We have had them bloom, however, even when planted in May and they will each year become stronger and bloom better. They may be left undisturbed for twenty years or more. In planting set the crowns two inches below the surface. They will do well also in partial shade and can therefore be used to brighten up sombre nooks. We prepay the postage.
FESTIVA MAXIMA.--This is by far the finest double white Paeony grown. The flower is of immense size, perfectly globular, the guard petals being large while the inner petals are crimped, thus making it appear extremely double.
