258 Racine County

This county was set off from Milwaukee in 1836, and was then organized as a separate county. The population in 1838 was 2054, in 1840 it had increased to 3475, and in 1842 it had almost doubled, being 6318; and since that period the increase of population has been very considerable.

[The town system is adopted; the county being divided into thirteen towns.

Bristol, township one in range twenty=one, was first established in 1840. The village of the same name is on the west side of the Des Plaines, twelve miles from Southport.

Burlington is embraced within the following limits; beginning at the south=west corner of section nineteen, in township two and range nineteen, and running thence east twelve miles; thence north five miles, thence west three miles; thence north three miles; thence west nine miles to the west line of the county, and thence south eight miles to the beginning.
