The town of Koshkonong in 1840 had 143 inhabitants, 26 horses, 193 meat cattle, 9 sheep, and 316 hogs. Fort Atkinson is a thriving village situated on both sides of Rock river at the north part of this town and immediately below the mouth of Bark river. It is understood that a temporary fort was erected here during the Black Hawk war- Hence the name.

Oakland is a town organzed in 1843 to embrace the surveyed township six in range thirteen lying north of Lake Koshkonng and west from Jefferson.

Union embraces township eight and the north four miles of town seven in range sixteen, being in the north east part of the county. It embraces some of the finest lands near the Oconomowoc, from which in 1843 was raised perhaps the best crop of wheat in Wisconsin. Rock
