according to the stage of [the] water in the two streams, but it is believed that it seldom exceeds three feet. The portage is one hundred and twelve miles by the Wisconsin, from the Mississippi; [and] one hundred and fifty eight [158] [from] by the course of the Neenah, from Green Bay, and forty miles from Madison.
Portage county was set off from Brown in 1836, and is to be organized for county purposes in 1844. Its population in 1840 was 1623; and in 1842 (excluding [soldiers] officers and soldiers at Fort Winnebago) it was 646. In 1840 it numbered 201 horses, 372 meat cattle, 127 hogs, 9 stores, and 14 saw mills: and the products of 1839 were 1815 bushels of wheat, 1018 of oats, 21 of buckwheat, 293 of Indian corn and 5539 of potatoes; 899 tons of hay and 7,150 dollars worth of skins and furs.
Post Offices are established at Fort Winnebago, Grand Rapids and Plover Portage.
