383 Blue Mounds

the grave of Lieutenent Force who was killed by an Indian hid in the tall grass in a small ravine near the place where the grave is now seen. This Indian was afterwards killed near the Four Lakes in a skirmish with General Dodge; volunteers; and a gold watch belonging to Lieut. Force was taken from the pouch of the Indian and restored to his family.

The following is a geological section extending from the summit of the Eastern Mound to the Wisconsin river at Helena.

1. Corniferous rock-or beds of chirt forming the peak of the mound 410 feet.
