It was on the Pekatonica that one of the first battles was fought with the Indians during the "Black Hawk war"-June 17th 1842. Gen. Dodge with a small party of men on the 17th of June 1832, traced the Indians along the main stream until late in the afternoon, when they came in right of a high bluff destitute of timber at a point where the river took a turn to the left. Five men were detailed to take charge of the horses, and the others after examining the priming of their pieces again set forward for the encounter; and were met by the Indians who had discovered the approach of the whites but had no chance of escape. At the first fire three of the red men were killed- the survivors returned the fire. After a second discharge from the whites, of pieces sling on their backs, before the Indians had time to reload, the two parties were engaged with pistols and knives. It was now a struggle of penon
