In 1832 twenty six Menomonee Indians were killed by a war party of the Sauks and Foxes within the town of Prairie du Chien, "in the hearing of its inhabitants, and in sight of the fort, which was", as we are informed by Mr. Schoolcraft, "made the subject of demand by the government for the surrendry of the murderers, and produced a concentration of troops on that frontier which eventuated in the Indian war of 1832."

The principal rivers in Crawford County are

Bad Axe which heads about about forty miles from Prairie du Chien and runs into the Mississippi. This stream is rendered memorable by the fact that the last and decisive battle with Black Hawk and his band took place at its mouth, on the 24th day of August 1832.

Ball river is another tributary of the Mississipi, few miles below Black river, at a beautiful prairie called "Prairie du Crosse", which was once much frequented by the Indians for the purpose of playing at a favorate game with a
