the very valuable mines of copper in that portion of the country belonging to Michigan, and it is probable that these mines will soon be extensively worked, should they prove to be as valuable as is at present anticipated.

At LaPointe a settlement was commenced several years since and has now become an important place.

There are in St. Croix county a very great number of small lakes and rivers whose names, even are not yet established with sufficient certainty to require a description here; and even an enumeration of such as are named on the maps would only tend to propagate error.
