Butte des Morts Lake (Great) an expansion of the Neenah river in Winnebago county four and a half miles above Lake Winnebago three and a half miles in length and from one to two miles in breadth.

Butte des Morts Lake (Little) an expansion of the Neenah river one and a half miles below Lake Winnebago, about four and a half miles long and one mile wide. There are two channels connecting the two lakes forming an island between them called Doty's Island:

Butte des Morts, or "Hills of the Dead" a hill formed by the Ottogamas or Foxes of the bodies [fallen] of their killed, in a battle many years ago between them and a [combined?] French and Chippewas, in which the Fox nation was nearly exterminated. The bodies were covered with Earth which is now grown over with grass and has very much the appearance of many other ancient mounds of the western country. These mounds
