Chippewa River- a large and important branch of the Mississippi rising near the Lac Vieux Desert and running in a south westerly direction enters the Mississippi at the foot of Lake Pepin, by a mouth five hundred yards wide. It is navigable for canoes one hundred and fifty miles, and has numerous branches, and is the outlet of several large lakes. 1 mile [of 2500?] [are] is in operation on this river [3,000 feet annually] Falls 75 miles by land from Black river falls-& same from mouth of Chippewa. Chippewa falls 24 ft in half mile. Five other falls above, besides rapids- Native Copper found here.
