Smith describes this grove as "one of the best timbered groves in this district, and although partially thinned of wood at this time by reason of the timber having been for some years used for smelting purposes, there is yet a very large [large] extent of heavy timber remaining. There saw the largest white oak and black walnut that I met with in the Territory. For beauty of prospect, fertility of soil, fine springs, and abundance of excellent timber, Elk Grove has not its superior situation in this part of the country". A Post Office is established at the Grove.
