Green County is bounded on the north by Dane County, on the east by Rock, on the south by the state of Illinois and on the west by Iowa county; or on the north by the north line of town four, east by the east line of range nine, south by the state line, west by the west line of range six. It is twenty four miles square and has therefore an area of five hundred and seventy six square miles or sections. Green county was set off from Iowa county and established in 1836 and organized as a separate county in 1838. Its population 1838-494, in 1840 was 933; in 1842-1594.The county seat is Monroe. Sugar river, and Little Sugar river water the eastern portion of the county; the Pekatonica enters the south west corner, and several of its branches rise in the western part of the county. The villages are Monroe, New=Mexico, & Centerville, and there has been laid out also Lexington and Livingston which are not yet built up. The surface is much broken by hills of moderate elevation
