Iowa County is bounded on the north by Richland and Sauk counties, east by Dane and Green, south by Illinois, and west by Grant county; or north by the Wisconsin river; east by the east line of range five, south by the state line and west by the Fourth Principal Meridian. It is thirty miles wide from east to west and has an average length of forty six and a half miles, and an area of thirteen hundred and ninety five square miles or sections. Iowa county was established and organized by the Legislature of Michigan [by an act passed [Dec. 8.] Sept. 6 1834]] to include all that part of Crawford county lying south of the Wisconsin river. Its population in 1830 was 1589, in 1836 it was 5,234; in 1838 (Grant being set off) it was 3218 in 1840 it was 3978 and in 1842 it is 5029. The county seat is Mineral Point. The surface of the country is much broken and uneven, especially in the northern part of the county. The principal streams that run north
