Iowa County

mine of copper is worked near Mineral Point, which now affords a large quantity of this useful metal to the trade. This mine was discovered as early as 1829 by Henry Lender but until recently, owing to practical difficulties in smelting has not until recently been much worked. The vein has been discovered at different points over a space extending three miles; and in 1840 the difficulties in smelting [of] the ore were [resumed] overcome, so that at present these mines are affording a rich return for the time and labor hereafter bestoned upon them.

Iowa County affords also much good farming lands, but, owing to the disposition to dig under the soil instead of on its surface for wealth, there are, in general, but little improved.-The Mineral Country of Wisconsin therefore presents facilities not usually associated-viz-a a rich mineral country and a soil well adapted for agriculture.
