Its appearance is highly picturesque and beautiful; the shores are very much indented with bays' and the islands are so numerous that Major Long counted fifty in looking before him at one place, and he saw about two hundred in passing the lake. All are on solid rock except one near the entrance of Rainy Lake River, which is a sand bar formed by the sand brought down the river. They are mostly small, and are covered with small trees, chiefly pine, spruce, hazel, willow, cherry, &c., besides vast quantities of bushes bearing berries. Most of the islands are formed of slate rock-one the Red Rock island is composed of granite of a reddish color.
