Madeline Island- In Lake Superior

Madison, the capital of the Territory, and the seat of justice of Dane County is beautifully situated between the Third and Fourth of the Four Lakes; was laid out in 1836 and in December of the same year it was by law made the permanent seat of government of the Territory, when the whole town consisted of one "log cabbun". It has now become quite a village with a post office, two taverns, a steam saw mill, two printing offices, &c issuing weekly paper. Public buildings have been erected for the accomodation of the Legislature and public offices. As public improvements are usually made to centre at or pass through the capital of a State or Territory we may suppose that such may be made at Madison and [that] with these advantages it may hereafter become a place of considerable importance.

The capital of Wisconsin, is Madison, in Dane county, about 80 miles west of Milwaukie. It is most delightfully situated between the Third and Fourth of the Four Lakes, and the country around is rich and picturesque. Madison contains about 300 inhabitants. Dane county in 1842, 776; having doubled in two years. The present population of the county is estimated at 900. There are good roads leading from Milwaukie to Madison, and the country thro' which they run is rapidly filling up.
