Manitowoc County is bounded on the north by Brown county on the east by the state [line] of Michigan on the south by Sheboygan and on the west by Calumet county; or on the north by the north line of town twenty, east by the state line in the middle of Lake Michigan, south by the south line of town seventeen, and west line of range twenty one. It has a length of twenty four miles, and an average breadth of [nineteen and two eights] 20 miles and includes an area of four hundred [and seventy seven] 80 square miles or sections. Manitowoc county was set off from Brown county in 1836 and organized as a separate county in 1839. Its population in 1840 was 235, in 1842-263. The county seat is at the Manitowoc Rapids. The Manitowoc river flows through the centre of the county and the East and West Twin rivers enter from the north: the Sheboygan runs through the south western part of the county- these with the branches of the [Menomonee?] Calvis Creek and Point creek and numerous nameless streams water the county.
