Manitowoc county

Pine lumber is manufactured in considerable quantities in this county, and several mills are erected for this purpose giving rise to settlements for farming purposes. The principal are at the Manitowoc Rapids and at Neeshoto on the West Twin river. The pine grows principally along the river, the timber on the rest of the country consisting of "hard wood". The soil is as good as is general found in Wisconsin, very rich and productive, yielding all the usual crops in great abundance. The county abounds in springs and small streams of pure water.

Statistics in 1840 agreeably to the U.S. Census.
