Manitowoc River, a large stream rising near Lake Winnebago
in Calumet County and discharging itself into Lake
Michigan thirty miles north of Sheboygan. It
drains about four hundred square miles of surface;
is navigable two and a half miles from its mouth
where a series of rapids commence extending twelve
miles with an aggregate fall supposed to be about
one hundred and forty feet. Above these rapids
the current is gentle and the stream is navigable
for canoes to within a few miles of Lake Winnebago.
The summit between the North branch and Lake Winnebago
at Clifton, (the north east angle of the lake) is according
to Captain Cram eighty five and a half feet above the
Lake, and the large marsh near the head of the river
(township twenty range nineteen) is sixty eight feet
above the lake. It is supposed that a canal may
be constructed on this route.
