Manitowoc- a town laid out on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Manitowoc river; a place of some importance as the depot of the lumber made on the river above. It contains about twenty buildings; and a light house has been erected by the government. A harbor may be easily constructed here which would be very important not only to the country around but to the interest of all vessels navigating Lake Michigan. The distance from Lake Winnebago to this place is thirty two miles, and if improved by Canal or railroad would make [this] it the outlet ofmuch of the country west and northwest of that [place] lake.
