Marquette County is bounded on the north by Brown county, on the east by Winnebago and Fond du Lac, and on the south and west by Portage, or on the west and north by the Neenah river, on the east by the east line of range thirteen, and on the south by the south line of town fourteen. Its length from east to west is twenty nine and a half miles, and its average breadth from north to south is thirteen and one sixth miles, having an area of three hundred and eighty eight square miles or sections. Marquette county was set off from Brown county in 1836, and has not yet been organized as a separate county, being attached to []. Its population in 1840 was 18-in 1842-59. The county seat is Marquette. The Neenah river which forms the western and northern boundary of Marquette county abounds in wild rice; and the marshes especially about the Green Lake afford abundance of cranberries; but the soil has been but little improved for the purposes of agriculture.
