upon horizontal layers of limestone rock. The constant action of the waves is gradually undermining and wearing away this bank, so that Wisconsin is usually loosing a portion of her Territory. It is entirely destitute of islands except at its northern extremity; its surface is five hundred and seventy eight feet above Tide water. It discharges its waters into Lake Huron through the straits of Mackinow, ([Michilinacinac]?) of ancient writers); but there are many striking proofs of its having formerly sent forth its waters towards the south through the valley of the Illinois river.
