which now forms a bar in the lake sufficient to prevent any except the smaller class of boats from entering. Petitions have been sent to Congress at every session since 1834 for [the] an appropriation to construct[ion] [of] thes epiers, but without success. A survey and estimate was made in 1836 and the report published by order of Congress. It is proposed to construct the piers not at the present mouth of the river, but at a point half a mile above where it approaches very near the lake, and where the bar would be avoided: there are many other advantages, especially to the navigation of the Lakes which would result from this location of the piers. The estimated cost of these piers is $92,183.54: but as this was made in 1836 when labor, [and] provisions, and merchandise were at very high prices, it is supposed that this estimate may be reduced at least one third.
