No city in the U.S. has grown up with any thing like the rapidity of Milwaukee-withi eight years a population of more than six thousand! The city of Rochester N.Y. has been often referred to as having increased more rapidly than any other in the world. Mr. O'Reily who has written a very valuable book entitled Sketches of Rochester & Western New York, asks bostingly "where, in what place, through all the broad & fertile west, can there be shown any town which has surpassed Rochester in the permanent increase of population business & wealth?" We may answer this question by making a little comparison.

Rochester was laid out in 1812 and in 1816 or 4 years the population was 331-
1820 " 8 " " 1500-
Milwaukee was laid out in 1835 and in 1839 or 4 years the population was 1500 or as much increase in four years as in Rochester during eight years!
But in 1843 or 8 years the population was over 6000 or four times as much as Rochester during the same period!
