Milwaukee County is bounded on the north by Dodge and Washington counties, on the east by the state of Michigan, on the south by Racine and Walworth counties, and on the west by Jefferson County; or on the north by the north line of town eight, on the east by the state line in the middle of Lake Michigan, on the south by the south line of town five, and on the west by the west line of range seventeen. It is twenty four miles wide from north to south, and has an average length of thirty three and seven eighths miles and an area of eight hundred and thirteen square miles or sections. Milwaukee county as organized as a separate county Sept. 6 1834 by the Legislature of Michigan, and then included all of Brown county south of town twelve, extending west to the line drawn south from the middle of the Wisconsin Portage. Its population in 1836 was 2892 in 1838 it was 3131 in 1840 it was 5,605 and in 1842-9,565. The county seat is Milwaukee. The town system of government is
