Milwaukee River, a large stream rising in Fond du Lac county ten miles south from Lake Winnebago, and running in a south easterly direction about thirty miles to within a short distance of Lake Michigan, and thence south nearly parallel with the Lake about thirty miles and enters at Milwaukee Bay a mile and a half below the town of Milwaukee. It is navigable three miles for the largest vessels, on the lakes, but the sand bar at the mouth prevents their entrance into the river. Immediately above this is a rapids where the water falls over horizontal strata of limestone for three or four miles, having an aggregate descent of thirty six feet. Near the mouth of the Kushkencky or Cedar Creek in Washington County the river is confined between high perpendicular rocky banks (limestone) and has a considerable fall.
