Milwaukee Bay a semi=circular indentation of the west shore of Lake Michigan at Milwaukee, six miles long, and about three miles deep. Its north and south capes or points, protect the shipping from all storms except those from the east which seldom occur. The bottom is clay affording excellent anchorage ground. It receives the Milwaukee river half a mile south of the middle of the bay; hence it is proposed to construct the harbor north of the mouth of the stream so as to be about equi-distant from each point.
