From the Portage to Lake Winnebago through which it passes the river runs through immense marshes or flats covered with tall grass and wild rice, and is very crooked. Below the lake there is a succession of rapids that require improvement in order to make the river navigable. There are Winnebago rapids, [having a descent of], Grand Chute, Little Chute, Grand Kakalin, Rapide de Croche, Little Kakalin, and Rapide des Peres. Above the lake it receives Wolf river from the north, a stream larger than the Neenah at that place. The estimated cost of improving this river made by Capt. Cram is $448,470.
