of the Territory. [Pekatonica] It was on [one of the branchs of] this stream that one of the first battles was fought with the Indians during the "Black Hawk War". It was on the 17th June [this Territory, June 17th] 1832. [It is] Col. Henry Dodge with a small party of men, traced the Indians, along the main stream, until late in the afternoon, when they cam in sight of a high bluff destitute of timber at a place where the river took a turn to the left. Five men were detailed to take charge of the horses, and the others, after examining the priming of their pieces again set forward for the encounter; and were met by the Indians, who had discovered the approach of the whites but had no chance to escape. At the first fire three of the red men were killed-the survivors returned the fire. After a second discharge from the whites, of pieces slung on their backs, before the Indians had time to reload, the two parties were engaged with pistols and knives. It was now a struggle of personal prowess, which resulted in the distruction of the whole party of Indians-not one, of a party of some twenty five or thirty escaped.
