Portage County as now established extends north to the state line
of Michigan embracing the country lying between two & nine [inclusive].
Its boundaries may be defined as follows - Commence on the said state
line at the point where the west line of range two East of the fourth principal
meridian would touch it - thence south to the north line of Sauk
County - thence East & South by the boundaries of Sauk County to the
south line of town ten on the Wisconsin river - thence east to
Dodge County or east line of Range 12 - thence north 24 miles - thence
west to the Neenah - thence down that River to east line of
range [nine] on Buffalo Lake thence north to the state line -
thence to the place of beginning.

Nearly the whole course of the Upper Wisconsin with its numerous rapids, falls, saw mills & Dells -
lies in this county
furnishing a large quantity of prime lumber. It takes its
name from the portage between the Wisconsin and Neenah river at Fort
Winnebago, which has been [begin crossed out] used by [end crossed out] known as an important point since
its first discovery by Father Marquette in 1673.
