Portage Canal - A canal or ditch made by a company across the
portage between the Neenah and Wisconsin rivers, two
feet wide and about the same depth. At times
of flood in the Wisconsin the water occasionally stands
at a depth of three feet on the marshy ground at this
remarkable portage; the Wisconsin at such times, being
the highest passing into the Neenah, thus sending
portions of its waters to the Ocean by two very
different routes. Capt Cram reports that the length
of canal necessary to cross this portage is seven thousand
seven hundred and thirty nine feet; and that the fall
from the Wisconsin to the Neenah in October 18939
was one foot and fifty five hundredths. This difference
constantly varies according to the stage of water in the
two streams, but it is believed that it seldom exceeds
three feet. This portage is one hundred and fifteen miles
by the Wisconsin from the Mississippi, and one hundred and
sixty six by the course of the Neenah from Green Bay.
