Racine County is bounded on the north by Milwaukee county, east by the state of Michigan, south by Illinois, and west by Walworth county; or north by the north line of town four, east by the state line in the middle of Lake Michigan, south by the state line of Illinois, and west by the west line of range nineteen. It is twenty four miles wide from north to south and has an average length of twenty five and two thirds miles, and has therefore an area of six hundred and sixteen square miles or sections. Racine county was set off from Milwaukee county in 1836, and was then organized as a separate county. Its population in 1838 was 2054 in 1840 it was 3475 and in 1842 it is 6318.

The county seat is Racine. The town system of government is adopted in this county, and it is divided into the following towns, [8] Racine, [3] Caledonia, [4] Mount Pleasant, [5] Pike, [13] Yorkville, [9] Rochester, [2] Burlington, [12] Wheatland, [10] Salem, [1] Bristol, [7] Pleasant Prairie, and [11] Southport.
