The state of Illinois is one hundred and fifty thousand dollars of which a part has already been expended. From the report of Capt. Cram who examined this river with a view to its improvement we have the following information-
"Judging from observation on the ground, unaided by the level between the head waters of Rock river, and those which seek the southern extremity of Lake Winnebago, it is inferred that a canal might be opened so as to draw water from the lake as a reservoir into the river"- The accuracy of this judgement may be seen from facts stated in different reports of the same officer. The level of Rock river at a point some distance below Johnson's rapids is stated to be one hundred and eighty feet above Lake Michigan- add to this the fall at Johnson's rapids (47.896 feet) and at Hurtis rapids (6.925 feet)-and suppose the river has an average descent of six inches a mile between the rapids (or 38.625 feet) we have the elevation of the mouth of Doty's river, two hundred and seventy three feet; but in another
