report the level of Lake Winnebago is stated as one hundred and sixty feet above Lake Michigan so that in order to make its waters run down Rock river, a "deep cut must be excavated [over] more than a hundred feet deep and extending from the Lake nearly to the Illinois state line! From Doty's river to the foot of Winnebago marsh the water is deep, the current gentle, and the channel is often divided into two or more. From thence to the head of Hustis rapids the channel is no where less than three and a half feet deep and the average width of the stream is from one hundred and fifty to two hundred feet, and the current is gentle-From Hustis rapids to Pecks rapids several sand bars obstruct the navigation which require a small expenditure for their removal. From the head of Peck's to the foot of Johnson's rapids there is a descent of 47.896 feet in a distance of eleven and one eighth miles requiring locks and dams. From thence to Holme's rapids at Rock Port only a few bars &c require removal; and
