Rock County is bounded on the north by the counties of Dodge and Jefferson, east by Walworth, south by Illinois, and west by Green county, or north by the north line of town four, east by the east line of range fourteen, south by the state line, and west by the west line of range ten. It is thirty miles long from east to west, and twenty four miles wide, and has an area of seven hundred and twenty square miles or sections. Rock was set off from Milwaukee in 1836 and was organized as a separate county in 1839. Its population in 1838 was 480 in 1840 it was 1701 and in 1842-2867-The county seat is Janesville. The county system of government is adopted in this county: the towns are [1]Beloit, [3]Clinton, [4]Fulton, [5] Janesville, [6] Johnstown, [7] Milton, [9] Union, [2] Centre and [8] Rock. The villages are Beloit, Janesville, and Rockport. The first settlements were commenced in 1836 at Rockport.[11].
