Rock County

sold to speculators who hold it with the expectation of
increase of value with improvement; hence this part
of the country is but little settled, although it presents
many inducements for the farmer. East of Rock
river the case is different _ there the land was to
some extent occupied before it was brought into
market, and consequently it has fallen into the
hands of actual settlers. Rock river runs
through the middle of the County from north to south, and
it is further watered by the Catfish, Turtle Creek, Sugar
river, and numerous smaller streams. East of Rock
river it is almost one continued prairie; the portion
not represented as prairie on the maps being but
slightly covered with trees and bushes. Lake
Koshkonong enters the county at the north, and there
are a great number of small lakes or ponds in
that part of the county. The soil is buried upon
limestone strata.
