The Stockbridge Indians, residing in the northern part of Calumet County, on Lake Winnebago, are taking the preliminary steps prescribed by a late act of Congress to become citizens of the U. States. But few distinctive aboriginal traits remain about them- they have thrown off entirely the habits of savage, and have fully adopted those of civilized life; they are industrious, orderly, and generally quite intelligent; and fully prepared to enter upon the duties incident to citizenship. Their number at present in the territory maybe estimated at three or four hundred.

The Oneidas who are located on a reservation, a few miles west of the Fox river near Green Bay, and who are so far advanced in a state of civilization, will next be knocking for admittance as members of the great white family.
