DIARY OF FRANCIS TAYLOR, 1789,

March,
10, Capt.Conway & Capt. White, who staid last night, went away after breakfast. G.C.Taylor returned from Winchester with cousin Jane Taylor- He brought me a pair shoes for 10/- & returned 18/- the balance of Guinea sent pr him.
11, My father, G.C.Taylor and I went to uncle Taylor's to dinner- Rob't Taylor & family there, also Betsy Pendleton, they got up from Caroline Saturday last- there was no company there besides- Weather smoky & warm.
12, Sowed Plant patch where it was last year. Cabbage, Lettuce & Mustard seed sowed in it. Weather continues smoky & hazy- Boys said Mr.Goodlett's wife was sick & that he was to go down last night & wou'd not be at school today- The bitch had 6 puppies.
13, Rained a little last evening & this morning. Sowed seeds in the part of plant patch this way. The best cabbage sowed in the farthest part- I went after dinner to C.Taylor's, Maj'r Moore dined there. J.Taylor was there after dinner. C.T. says Mr.Thurston extremely ill. Row'd Thomas came there for medecine
14, Killed three bitch puppies- fine weather- Sowed peas in Garden, 8 rows next the house of midling- the 2 other rows of a later sort- Also sowed parsley seed in bed next the house- My father rode to Court house after dinner. G.C.T. dined at C.Taylor's, says he heard that Mr.Thurston was better.
15, [Sunday] Rich'd Taylor [son of Com.Richard] sick, gave him dose salts. Reuben Taylor returned from Caroline, got here to dinner, returned 6/- as he did not buy anything for me- he brought me a letter from Richard Taylor & one from Ben Taylor- says Bro'r Richard's wife has been ill of a pleurisy but has got better- drops rain. [Commodore Richard Taylor's wife was Catherine Davis WKA]
16, Richard Taylor tolerable well, he & Colby went to school. Sent wheat & corn to mill.
17, Cleared path toward school-house- Met with Capt. Burnley and walked with him to uncle Taylor's-Maj'r Moore & wife, Capt Burnley & do., Winslow Parker & do., & Miss Sally Madison dined there. Heard that Mr.Wm.Thurston died last night at Mr.Ben Porter's. Weather warm & smoky.
18, Rainy morning, moderate & continued dark day. Mozingo brought a Bee hive from Reuben Taylor's- Henry Pendleton & Jas. Taylor jun'r were here to dinner, said J.Taylor went today to Culpeper Court-
19, Hub Taylor rode here after breakfast & said his wag'n would bring up some things to-morrow- G.C.T. went with Hub'd Taylor to Reuben Taylor's. G.Taylor & myself went to J.Taylor's & dined Hen.Pendleton jr & Mrs James there.
20, Hub'd Taylor's waggon brought home a Sack of Salt which it brought from Fred'g also a Barrel of Linseed oil which J.Griffy had brought from Mr.Blair's-where it was sent by Maj'r Hite, for G.Taylor- We went to C.Taylor's-got some trees from his young Orchard & sent home by Frank- G.Taylor, G.C.T. and self dined there- also Betty Chew.
21, Had young apple trees planted to South of house. The row to the East, White Apples, also three of the farthest in the next row- the others Codlings & Junettings the others planted in two rows to graft upon. Planted Damson stones & peach kernels in the East bed of the Garden next little house- The first row are very latter plumb peach, the next to Damsons not quite so late-after damsons several good sorts, forward and midling- soft & plumb- J.Taylor came here in evening and left his papers.
22, [Sunday] G.C.T. went to Reu Taylor's, the rest of family at home.
23, Went to Court, gave in my last Taxable property &c, 1 White Tith, 1 Black above 16 & 2 horses- Mr.J.Blair delivered me a letter from Maj'r Hite giving acco't of Barrel 25 1/2 Gall's Linseed oil &c [Oil and Cask, 25 1/2 Gals=£5:6:6:pd. June 24] Also a letter from Benj.Taylor- At Court A.Holmes del'd me a pair Breeches altered. I paid him 6/- for making a pair and altering these. paid Austin Webb 7 1/2d for Almanack. Returned Instruments borrowed of Maj'r Lee.
24, J.Taylor sent his cart to H.Taylor's for Cask of Cyder, the cart also brought a Cask for G.Taylor, 35 Gallons Cyder at 6d- I went to Court, did not dine there yesterday or to-day-
25, Snowed in morning and continued till 10 o'clock, it then cleared and most of the snow melted by night. Borrowed Skillett of J.Taylor & Stewed sundry kinds fruit-
