Profefsor Joseph Henry L.L.D. Chairman of the Light House Board

Sir,

I am just in receipt of a letter from a certain Dr. Gamble of Albany Oregon in which he expresses a desire to occupy the Light House dwelling at the entrance to Yaquina Bay at a nominal rental with the understanding that he is to take care of the buildings and premises. Enclosed please find a copy of the letter from Dr. Gamble, the original of which I shall forward to General Michler, the engineer officer of this District for his information.

Sir, In obedience to your order of Jany. 4th 1873, the Board for the examination of such persons as might be brought before it for Keepers and assistant Keeper, was convened at Astoria, Oregon, Feby., 10th, 1873, and examined and found qualified the only two persons present, for assistant Keeper at Cape Foulweather. The assistant Keeper in the Astoria Su perintency were duly notified, but failed to appear, on account, as I understand, of the uncertainty of getting the position of Keeper, they were not willing to incur the necessary

Yaquina Bay: shall property be sold.

Sir:

Your opinion is requested as to whether it is desirable to possess the Yaquina Bay Light Station property, in view of the expense and trouble its custody entails on the Light House Establishment, now that the light is discontinued???. If you think it should be disposed of please state when you think would be the best time for its sale.

Yaquina Bay - Pay of Custodian

One Enclosure.

Sir:

Enclosed herewith you will find a copy of a letter from the Honorable the Secretary of the Treasury, dated October 5th, by which the Board is authorized to pay Mr. R.A. Bensall, at a rate not to exceed $600 per annum for his services while in charge of the Light-House property at Yaquina Bay, Oregon. In accordance with this authority you are authorized to make the payment in question from the appropriation for salaries of Light-House Keepers. Funds for this purpose will be sent you. Please refer to this letter, by date, on the voucher, as your authority for making the payment.

for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1876. There can be no doubt that the draft of $508.69 mentioned by you is composed of amounts from the two different appropriations as specified above, and no further requisition from you will be needed. Separate and distinct accounts should be rendered of expenditures from these two appropriations.
