Edinburgh August 13th 1857

In the morning called at Macfarlane's bade Mr Young & the rest good bye at the head of Infirmary Street. Met several students & while standing speaking to them, Saw Sophia & James Forbes coming down. Walked down the Bridge with them, left S. to go to D. Thomson's & J. F. & I went to see Fred at the Brewery. J. F. & I in the afternoon went down in the Leith coach & called on John Moore. Saw Mrs M. bade them good bye. Walked along to Trinity & dined there. Fred did not come down. Went down to the greenhouse to smoke got a fuschia which S. wrapped up for me, bade Mr. R. good bye. Maria asleep. Did not awake her. bade Mrs. F. good bye. S. came to the door, nearly broke down at last on leaving all my dearest friends [good bye--2 lines drawn through this] for how long? had to run off to the train. J. F. with me. We called again on Fred & then I went home. Oh such a trial I had, tried to keep off the evil moment to the last but the hour came

Augt. 9th Nothing particular Went to the English Church with Willie in the Afternoon [Struck through: Augt] Walked in Leith. along the beach &ce. in the evening.

Monday Augt. 10th. Have had a dip in the sea each mg. & had one this. Afterwards went to P'pans saw Mrs. A. in bed still. Mrs. & Miss Nellis up stairs with whom I dined Mrs. Ritchie at Mrs. Aitchisons at tending upon her. [Struck through: Miss Paterson & Martha Scott came to tea in the evening. Martha played a great deal & well. her sister Mary Scott engaged to be married expec- ted in a few days.] [written above: not arrived yet] left to catch Musselburgh train ([struck through: too late]) (9 ocl) [struck through: & had to walk adventure] [written between lines: too late walked to [struck through: Por] ] [struck through: with] Portobello [Struck through: Station]!! Thursday 13 Went to Edinr. Met Struthers &ce. returned early to Portobello with Willie by way of Jacks Lodge gate & Duddingstone had a walk in the evening Andw. Anderson & party called Willie & I out (Andrew who has just returned from Australia & his father have previously called upon me in London)

Friday 14 Went to Edinr. Called on Andw. Anderson. (his sister very ill) Went with him to make various calles at Leith St. Terrace. Saw Finlay an Australian lady of Andrews acquaintance. Andrew Paton at the Brewery &ce had lunch at the Rainbow
