dropped from the quarter of the ship & the native succeeded in taking hold of it. 6 seconds longer & he would have been lost. This forenoon made visits round the sick men found most of them improving. 2 men however still remain in a precarious state.
19th Left Kedgeree in tow of the Sydney past Saugor island between 12 & 1 oclock. lost sight of land at 2. OClock. Pilot went left at 4 oclock. I sent letters for home stating that I was of to the Cape & that Barry was to draw my pay & remit Cos. Rs. 50 monthly. Wrote to Fred Bessie & Kate I. This Afternoon boy fell overboard from boat. [illegible?] and bravely lines dropped for him but he struck out from the ship Lascars would scarely help to save him but on being Shouted to from our ship they reached him an oar As soon as he got into the boat he

June 30th. 1858 Wednesday
Took steamer up to Calcutta Capt. & I friends again. Called on Barry on my Arrival. Got a large bundle of letters & papers. Good news from home. letter from Kate acknowledging receipt of presents. No letters from Mr. Young Mr. Acheson or James Forbes.
July 1st. 1858 Thursday.
Wriote home. 13 days in Calcutta this time during which I paid all the debts I owed every one & sent £10- home. nothing very important occured. A good many cases of Cholera about. the weather very hot during the day. Continued to live on board the "Belgravia".
Saturday 19th July 1858 woke up with great headache

hot skin & quick pulse for 2 or 3 days had been running about a good deal in the heat trying to get head money for troops &ce, I went up to Marine Office was told I would not get it as I had been sent on board the "Belgravia" expressly for that duty Called on Barry told him I had fever asked him to call on me at Mrs. Lowe's as instructed to take Lodgings there. he asked me to stay with him. I went up took possesion of T Barry's room. had strong emetic. up slept well after it during the night.
Monday July 12th. 1858
Had to get up early this morning to go on board stemr. Cape of God Hope for Akyab was on board an hour before I could get a Ghanie on going on board I found she would not sail

Saturday Oct. 23rd. 1858.
During the last month have still continued on bd. [board] the "Proserpine" the weather has been very hot & close we have has another trip to Kyauk Phyoo & Sandoway the latter to take Mrs. Beddy up there. Have sent home Rs 100 for RL and a letter by each mail Received a letter from Jessie at Kyauk Phyoo August date. Wrote on the 18th Just to Barry McLaren house in answer to Jessies letter & an offer of service up county from the D.I. & the Govr. in Chief. have been atteg. Edith Mg. & Eg. Strong breeze of wind last night. No word from Fred or K yet.

Up early this mg. still pursuing our course for Akyab At 12 oclock came to anchor in Akyab Harbour Sent off immediately for letters to Huson's had none. At dinner time the Captains letters came off bringing one from Mary Fred & Barry. Good news from all Barry promises 8P lent on T 20/- sent Oct 22nd. Answer to my letter to Sir Colin stating that Asst. surgeons are only appointed in England has nothing to say to such nominations. News that Bob Auld has [come struck through] gone [written above] home
