Went to go on board the "Adelaide" steamer bound from China with invalids home Dadson had a brother badly wounded in China & expected it possible that he might be on board there. We got alongside just as she got steam up and was under way. We hailed & inquired. We were answer in the negative. I was disappointed in not getting a letter on board her for you as she carried a mail home. We next went on board the "Octavia" there I saw my old friend Dr. Taylor. Visit to Constantia as related before. parley from Mr. Young. house in portobello Asked Robt. Hunte to write again before leaving the Cape. dispatched on the 20th April p. S.S. Anchored a[t] Diamond harbour this evening.

June 30th. 1858 Wednesday

Took steamer up to Calcutta Capt. & I friends again. Called on Barry on my Arrival. Got a large bundle of letters & papers. Good news from home. letter from Kate acknowledging receipt of presents. No letters from Mr. Young Mr. Acheson or James Forbes.

July 1st. 1858 Thursday.

Wriote home. 13 days in Calcutta this time during which I paid all the debts I owed every one & sent £10- home. nothing very important occured. A good many cases of Cholera about. the weather very hot during the day. Continued to live on board the "Belgravia".

Saturday 19th July 1858 woke up with great headache

stayed at Bailey's all day went up in their Gharrie to the train. 4 as. & came down to Calcutta between 5 & 6. Steamer at Howrow smashing the Davy's's [?] &ce. [written between lines: Smith came down to Calcutta secure now]

Arranged all my clothes this mg. ship to go next Tuesday 15th. Went out with young Philip to Larry's Bank posted a letter to Mr. Young. Called on Capt Eals & [struck through: went] Mrs. Eales had got some Chicken work. 3 Collars & Sleeves 15/. Went to China Bazaar bear up 3 shops for things to take home told them to send for a look tomorrow mg. playe[d] whist all evg. with Mrs. Philips & the Misses Ogilvie

on Ritchie, McGibbon Rev. Faithful had lunch at "Rainbow" & then went to Struthers. Saws Dr. & Mrs. A. Dr. & Mrs. Struthers, Miss Greig Lucy &ce.
