& a Mr.Ward. Had an excellent dinner Sat talking with Dr. Ritchie in the evg. & wrote a letter home.

Wednesday. Jany. 23rd. 1861.

Down to breakfast at 8.30 after a very comfortable nights rest. Went to the office with Dr. Ritchie after & saw the different books schedules etc to be kept. Afterwards went round the asylum with Dr. R. & was introd-ced to the patients etc. After dinner went up with Dr. R. to a meeting of the Geological Society in Somerset House. Heard a paper on the [struck through: Mor] so called Moraines of the Punjab. Discussion by. & Pf. Ramsey of Glasgow. Also a paper on. Fossil fish & one on Chalk: presented by Huxley, Ramsey. Whittaker etc. had tea after: & Dr.R. & I walked to the bank. I took a bus back. From there had some brandy hot with Dr.R

After Marriage Ceremony saw ladies to carriages & went to breakfast at Chandwick Place. Speeches by various parties. Dr. Alexander the "Wee Cooper". left after break fast & went with Mc.Gibbon & Penfold to Registrars & then to Mc.Gibbons office. waited looking at plans &ce. till it was too late to see Alexander & Lucy before going. After going to House took a cab with Penfold & Mc.Gibbon & went to Glasgow Station found the train just leaving saw them & said good bye. Went to Portobello dressed for Struthers party in the evening Went by train took Cab & called for Carr at the Clarence & went to Struthers party rather a pleasant evening danced

Transcription Conventions

Multiple Languages: If there is more than one language in the document, transcribe what you can and use the <unclear>LanguageName</unclear> for the language that you do not transcribe with the name of the language. <unclear>Hebrew</unclear>
Capitalization: Maintain original
Dates: Enclose them in the date tag. <date>1896</date>
Deletions: Use Strike.
Gap: Used for a gap in the transcription such as damage to the page or a large block of space. <gap></gap>
Heading: Used for obvious headings. <head>This is a Heading.</head> This is a Heading.
Hyphenation: Preserve hyphens (including "-" characters) at the ends of lines. If a word continues on a new line, preserve the hyphen and then follow the line breaks rule by hitting return once to indicate a new line and continue transcribing the hyphenated word.
Italics: Used for italicized text. This text is italicized This text is italicized.
Line Breaks: Hit return once after each line ends. Two returns indicate a new paragraph, which is usually indentation following the preceding sentence in the original. The times at the end of each entry should get their own paragraph, since the software does not support indentation in the transcriptions.
Punctuation: Add modern periods, but don't add punctuation like commas and apostrophes.
Superscript: Used for superscript text. xls xl^s
Subscript: Used for subscript text. xls xl_s
Symbols: For apothecary and alchemical symbols, use these symbols followed by the meaning of the symbol in brackets: Rx [recipe]; ℈ [scruple]; ʒ [dram]; ʒs [half dram]; ℥ [ounce]; ℥s [half ounce]; ℔ [pound].
