Ernest Stanley "Gordon" Lacey grew up in Mosman. His parents lived at 'Richmond', 24 Rosebery Street. He went to school locally and worked as a mail assistant at Mosman Post Office before enlisting in 1917. Wounded for the first time in May 1918, he returned to his Battalion, the 53rd, in August, just before they were to take part in two key actions, the Attack at Anvil Wood and the Battle of St. Quentin Canal. Lacey was hit again, by shell fire, on 29 September, and died of his wounds at the 1st Australian General Hospital in Rouen on 9 October 1918.

8 days. Moved into new billets 22nd Went to Bonnay for a bath 23rd on Lewis Gun Range. 24th On Aeroplane Guard. 28th Sunday nothing doing. 30th Prepared to move at 5p. Went via Bonnay up the line. A Coy out in advance of the front line, in outposts. Things very quiet about here. 3rd we were relieved by B Coy. about midnight. C.C.S. Put on Hospital Train and came down to 3 General at La Treport. Looked after well in Hospital. 12th On Hospital train again for Le Havre. 13th Landed in the after noon and taken on Hospital Ship "Carisbrook Castle". 14th Landed at Southampton and got train for Boscombe. a stroll. This is a fine district about here, and the weather is perfect. "You never know, y'know". Very good. Got the train from King's Cross, at 10-10. Arrived about 4-30. Spent evening with Nellie Clegg. 22nd Saturday. Went to Bunces with Nellie Richmond, & Martha Shepherd. 23rd Walked round in the morning with Mrs Barraclough. Went out in the afternoon with Nellie, Martha & Mary. It seems strange up here without Bill, but they give me a good time. 24th Rolled out at 10-15 went down town.
