8: [continued from preceding page] with clear, fine and warm weather. Sea smooth. Steamer Willamett arrived today. Keepers painting lantern and watch room floors whitewashing inside of tower, also cleaning in windows in Oil house. 2nd ass't went to Newport.

9: Light wind to moderate and fresh breeze N.W. thee 24 hours with fair weather during the 24 hours. Sea smooth. Had two visitors today. Keepers painting the tower stairs and landings. 1st ass't whitewashing and painting his quarters.

10: Light variable winds & calm these 24 hours with light rain and mist showers during the 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't painting in his quarters also working on the road. Keeper went to Newport on business.

11: Light variable winds first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light N.West wind, clearing weather; first part little cloudy. Sea smooth. Keepers painting picket fence around dwelling & tower & cleaning paint on the outside of lantern. 1st ass't went to Newport. Keeper also working in his garden. Willamett Valley sailed today for San Francisco.

12: Light variable winds and calm first pat of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light to moderate breeze, fine weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't went fishing today.

13: Moderate to fresh breeze NW. These 24 hours with high dry fog first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours some thick fog. Sea smooth. Keepers painting stairs and landing inside of tower. 1st ass't painting in his quarters. Keeper & 2nd ass't went to Newport, bought nails today to do the repairs at Station.

14: Fresh to moderate breeze N.W. first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light N.W. wind and calm with frequent fog showers during the 24 hours. Sea quite smooth. Keeper cleaning the tower windows and repairing the door that leads t othe balcony. 1st ass't painting in his quarters and working [on] road. 2nd ass't went to Newport for recreation: Left the station at 6 A.M.

15: Light N.W. wind and calm with fog showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light wind to moderate breeze N.W., fair weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't went fishing today. Keeper went to Newport on important business. Left the station at 9 A.M. 2nd ass't returned to the Station at 5. P.M.

16: Light N.W. wind & calm first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours moderate breeze N.W. with cloudy weather but dry and warm. Sea smooth. 1st ass't & 2nd cutting grass inside of yard. Keeper went to Newport on important business and to get some supplies. Had five visitors today. Keeper left the station at 7.30 A.M.

17: Light variable winds and calm with fair and warm weather during the 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't cutting grass inside of the yard today and also went fishing. Mr Whitten and Mr Stimpson hauling lumber to do the repairs reported to be done the 30th of April to Light House Engineer. 2nd ass't went to Newport today. Keeper returned to the station at 4.30 P.M.

18: Light South wind and calm first part of 24 hours with fog showers. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds & calm, fair and warm weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Had four visitors. 1st ass't went fishing, working in garden, and went to Newport, hauling lumber today.

19: Light N.W. to South wind and calm first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light to moderate and fresh breeze N.W. with frequent fog showers during the 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't went fishing. Had five visitors today.

20: Moderate to fresh breeze N.W. these 24 hours with clear, fine weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper went over to the Jeffries estate to see about building a fence. Hauling lumber today. Mr. Ford the Carpenter went to work today building the steps around Keeper's dwelling. 2nd ass't went to Newport on important business. Left Station at 7. A.M.

21: Moderate breeze and light N.W. wind these 24 hours. First part fog showers. Last part clear, fine weather. Sea a little rough. General duties for the day. 1st ass't cutting grass around dwelling. Carpenter working on repairs. Laborer will come to work tomorrow. Hauling lumber and posts today. 2nd ass't returned to the station at 6.30 P.M.

31: Light wind to moderate and fresh breeze N.West these 24 hours with clear fine weather but a little smokey. Sea smooth. Keeper putting the supply of Oil in Oil house. 2nd went to Newport. Oliver hauling supplies. Keeper and 1st ass't showing visitors in tower. Had 11 visitors.

1: Moderate to fresh breeze N. West these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours thick damp fog. Last part of 24 hours clear, fine but little smokey weather. Sea smooth. General duties for day. Keeper putting oil in Oil-house. Oliver hauling Oil from Newport. Keeper went to Newport. Had eight visitors.

2: Light variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours with smokey weather. Last part of 24 hours light N. West wind, clear, fine weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Mr. Oliver hauling Oil from Newport to the Cape. Keeper putting Oil in Oil-house. 1st ass't went to Newport. Had 10 visitors today. 2nd ass't showing visitors in tower. Steamer Willamett Valley & George Chance crossed bar at 3.30 P.M. Steamer Manzanita passed by the light going north within about 1 mile north of light, turned and went back and went into Yaquina bay.

3: Light variable wind and calm first part of 24 hours with fair and smokey weather. Last part of 24 hours light N. West wind. Sea smooth. Keeper putting Oil in Oil-house. Mr. Oliver finished hauling Oil from Newport. 1st ass't went fishing. Keeper & 2nd ass't went to Newport. Had 4 visitors. U.S. Steamer Manzanita came out of Yaquina bay and passed by the cape at 7.30 A.M., bound north. Keeper & 2nd ass't hauling hay hauled from Newport to cape.

4: Light South wind and calm with thick, damp fog and smokey weather during these 24 hours. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Had twenty visitors today. The barometer has been down to 29.80 and 27.90 for the past week.

5: Light wind S. to S.E. and calm with thick, damp fog first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours moderate to fresh breeze East to S.E. and South with frequent rain showers. Sea quite rough. Keeper putting hay in barn. Had 9??? visitors. The barometer is down to 29.78 at 4.P.M.

General duties for day. 1st ass't showing visitors in tower & went fishing. 2nd ass't went to Newport. Had 14 visitors. Keeper fixing platform of the east side of barn. Keeper had a letter from owners of sealing boat on beach to sell her and pay all charges and send bill amt to them.

9: Fresh to moderate breeze to light N.W. wind with thick, dap fog most of the 24 hours. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Had 12 visitors today. 1st ass't went fishing and showing visitors in tower. Keeper & 2nd ass't went up north beach trout fishing today.

10: Light South wind with thick, damp fog during the 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for day. Had 9 visitors today. 1st ass't went fishing. 2nd ass't practicing graining. Keeper went to Newport to get supplies.

11: Light South wind & calm with thick, damp fog during these 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties. 2nd ass't learning to grain wood work. 1st ass't showing visitors in tower. Had seven??? visitors today.

12: Light South wind with thick damp fog and smoke during most of 24 hours. Sea smooth. The barometer is down to 29.64 at 3.P.M. Keeper putting 200 Gals of Oil in Oil room. 2nd ass't digging potatoes. 1st ass't went fishing today. Had three visitors.

General duties for the day. 1st ass't went fishing and to Newport. 2nd ass't showing visitors in tower & working in garden and packing wood from beach to top of bluff. Had fourteen visitors today.

14: Light East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with fair & warm weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for day. 1st asst making hay & went fishing. 2nd asst painting in his Quarters. Steamer Homerarrived from San Francisco today.

15: Light variable winds and calm these 24 hours with fair and warm weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd asst went to newport after mail and to take mail. Had one visitor today.

18: Light variable winds first part of 24 hours. Last part of twenty-four 24 hours light N.West wind with a damp weather during 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper & 2nd asst went to Newport. 1st asst went fishing.

19: Light to moderate breeze N.West these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours light fog showers. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea quite smooth. Keeper went to Newport to take mail. 1st asst went fhishing and raking up the hay around Keeper's dwelling.

20: Moderate to fresh breeze N.West these 24 hours with fair weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day.Capt. Winant of the steamer Bandorville landing two men at this station at 6.30 A.M. having picked them up off Columbia bar at 4 P.M. the 19th, clinging to their sunken boat nearly exhausted - could not have survived much longer. They were capsized at 8 A.M. the 19th near the bar. This was the nearest point he could have landed them as he had the steamer Eva in tow, bound for Gardenier. The names of the men are Mr Fred Jackson and Mr Elias Michelson of Astoria. Keeper gave them breakfast and took them to Newport and put them in charge of Mr Bensell the Customer House Officer. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport to take the two men that were landed at cape. U.S. Light-House Tender Manzanita crossed Yaquina bar to Newport at 1 P.M. and landed 2,200 Gallons of Oil for this station.

21: Fresh breeze N.West these 24 hours with clear fine weather during 24 hours. Sea smooth. 1st asst went fishing. Had four visitors. The asst Inspector Lieut. Blish arrived at the station at 8 A.M., inspected station and left at 8:45 for Newport. U.S. Steamer Manzanita sailed for the south to visit and leave oil & etc to the stations. Mr Stimpson hauling oil from Newport to the station. 2nd asst went to Newport on important business.

22: Fresh to moderate breeze N. West with clear fine weather during these 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Mr Stimpson hauling oil from Newport to the station. Keeper packing wood from the beach today.

23: Moderate breeze to light N.West wind these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Last part of 24 hours high dry fog. Sea very smooth. Mr Stimpson hauled the last of the oil today from Newport. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport after supplies. Had two visitors. Light House Tender Manzanita came up from the South, crossed Yaquina bar to Newport at 7. P.M.

24: Light variable winds with light fog showers during these 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper & 1st asst went fishing. Had fourteen visitors. U.S. Steamer Manzanita crossed out over Yaquina bar & passed this light for Astoria at 5. A.M.

12: Moderate breeze N. West to light South wind with thick, damp fog most of 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Steam schooner crossed Yaquina bar into Newport at 11.30 A.M. A steamer crossed into Newport at 2 P.M. could not [identify] what she was, being too foggy. The steamer that crossed over Yaquina bar was the U.S. Tender Columbia and landed rest of Light House supplies.

13: Light wind to moderate and fresh breeze N. West these 24 hours with thick damp fog during 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Mr. Stimpson hauled the last of annual supplies. The Columbia having landed them at Newport. 1st asst went to Newport.

14: Light South wind and calm; thick, damp fog during these 24 hours. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Had 3 visitors today. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport after supplies. U.S. Steamer Columbia arrived from herata head??? at Newport at 10 A.M.

15: Light South wind and calm with thick damp fog first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light N.West wind, fair weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went to Newport on important business. Keeper took a walk about one mile from station. Had 5 visitors. U.S. Steamer Columbia left Newport and passed north going to Astoria at 8.30 P.M.

16: Moderate to fresh and strong breeze N.West these 24 hours, fair weather during 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Had three visitors. Keeper went to Newport to take calf over and wait for mail. 1st asst went to Newport.

First asst Keeper of the New Dungeness Light Station visited this station today.

20: Light variable winds and clam with fair weather these 24 hours. Sea very smooth. 2nd asst went over on the beach to get a load of wood. 1st asst went up on north beach for pleasure - Had nine visitors today. U.S. Light-House Tender Columbia passed this light going south at 6.30 P.M.

21: Light variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light wind to moderate breeze N.West with fair weather during 24 hours. 1st asst went fishing and took 31 visitors in tower. Keeper & 2nd asst went to Newport. A steamer passed by the station going north at 8.15 P.M. and looked like the Columbia but too dark to tell [for] certain.

22: Moderate breeze to light N.West wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours moderate breeze N.West with clear, fine and warm weather. Sea smooth. 1st asst went fishing and to Newport after mail. 2nd asst showing visitors in tower and in bathing over on the north beach. Had 22 visitors.

23: Calm to light South wind these 24 hours with fair weather. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Had 18 visitors today. 1st asst went fishing. 1st and 2nd assts showing visitors in tower. Steamer Robarts arrived in to Newport at 8 P.M. Keeper went to Newport after supplies Left the station at 10. A.M.

30: Light N. to East wind, little damp first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours clear, fine and cool weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 2nd asst went to Newport on important business. 1st asst went fishing. Mr Whitten and Mr Stimpson hauled a load apiece of supplies for Engineer. Mr McCullen has hauled the Whistling buoy as far as road on north beach today.

December

1: Fresh breeze East these 24 hours with clear, fine but little cool [weather]. Sea quite smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 1st asst went to Newport Mr. Whitten completed hauling the Light House supplies consisting of Cement & etc. Mr Whiters arrived at the station at 10 A.M. to repair cement cellar walks, put window frame in Keeper's dwelling & etc.

2: Strong breeze East, fair weather these 24 hours. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper left the station to get a Mason and Laborer to work on the repairs at the station. 2nd asst went to Newport after a laborer & supplies.

3: Strong breeze East first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light North wind with clear fine weather during 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Keepers changing wood and cleaning out the 2nd asst cellar to get it ready to cement the floor. 1st asst went fishing. Mr Whitten hauling sand for repairs. Mr Whiters and two laborers working on the Engineers repairs today.

4: Light East to S. East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds with fair weather during 24 ours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. Mr Whitten hauling sand from the beach to mix with the cement. Mr Withers cementing walks around dwelling, cementing top of lantern and laying some tiling??? today.

5: Fresh breeze to gale S. to S.W. and West these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours light rain showers. Last part of 24 hours hard rain. Sea quite rough. Mr Whitten hauling sand. Mr. Withers cementing cellar in 2nd asst's Quarters. The barometer 29.10 today.

6: Light East to S. East wind to moderate breeze S.W. these 24 hours with frequent rain, hail, and snow showers. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. Keeper changing wood in 2nd asst cellar so the Mason can cement the cellar. Mr Whitten hauling sand to mix cement. Mason cementing cellar today and working [on] drain. Barometer 29.22 today.

7: Moderate breeze S. East with rain, hail, and snow showers. Last part of 24 hours fresh breeze to a Gale S. East with rain showers. Sea rough. General duties for the day. Keeper and 2nd asst went to Newport after supplies today. Mr Whitten hauling sand for the Mason to mix with Cement. Mason cementing cellar floor in 2nd asst's part. The barometer 28.88 today.

8: Gale to fresh breeze S.E. to S.W. these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours rain showers. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea very rough. Keepers changing wood in Keepers part of cellar. Mason cementing cellar & walks around dwelling. Mr. Whitten hauling sand today. Mr Cahill laying tiling??? around dwelling. The barometer down to 29.50 today.

9: Heavy gale S.E. to S. West with frequent rain showers during these 24 hours. Sea very rough. General duties for the day. The barometer went down to 29.90 Mason cementing cellar floors in Keepers Quarters today.

10: Fresh breeze West to light S.East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours Moderate to fresh breeze S. East with light rain showers during 24 hours. Sea rough. Mason cementing walks around dwelling. Mr Withers putting window in 2nd asst's Quarters. Mr. Whitten hauled conductors & sand today. Keeper & 2nd asst went to a Wedden [wedding, surely?]

11: Gale to fresh breeze S. East to S.W. with light rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours fresh breeze N.West, fair weather. Sea quite rough. Steamer South Coast arrived off the Yaquina bar from the N.W. where she was blown during the late heavy galer. She is trying to enter. The Mason cementing Keeper's cellar and walks around dwelling. Mr Withers working on the [word missing] that he put in 2nd asst's Quarters. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing.

U.S. Light Tender Manzanita arrived and crossed into Newport at 9 P.M. yesterday and landed annual supplies.

U.S. Light House tender crossed into Yaquina at 9:30 a.m. Commander J??? C. Morong arrived at the Station at 2:30 p.m. Inspected the Station and left at 4 p.m. for Newport where he attend to the buoy work there.
